Early
years
John
Flynn was born at King Edward Memorial Hospital 19th June 1945. He was
the youngest son of the late Kevin and Olive Flynn. His two brothers: Bernard
Flynn and Laurie Flynn. The eldest brother James died in Kalgoorlie from
meningitis one week short of his first birthday..
Until
age 9 John and his brothers lived at Stanhope Rd in Kalamunda where his
father owned an orchard.
John
attended Piecies Brook school on Mundaring road when he was 6 and then
went to Kalamunda Primary school. His father sold the orchard and then
obtained employment with the new BP refinery in Kwinana, so the family
moved to Medina.
John
attended Medina primary school and then entered the new Kwinana Junior
High school.
Then
the family moved to Rockingham where John spent many carefree days at the
beach.
At
age 15 John began senior high school at John Curtin in Fremantle and travelled
by bus every day.
At
age 17 John began study at the University of Western Australia in Nedlands
and finally graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Dental Science degree.
John married Helen Edwards when he was still in the 4th year of study.
John was a car enthusiast
and was noted for driving a Jaguar Mk5 and then a
Mk 7 as a student. His very first car was a green 1948 Hillman.
Professional
Days
Wongan
Hills Dental Surgery 1969 - 1971
John
conducted his first private practice at Wongan Hills in WA.
He
succeeded Dr Les Waldon who was the first resident dentist in Wongan Hills.
John's interest in cars
grew and he purchased an Alfa Romeo GT and later a Jaguar XK120.
John then tried his hand
at local dirt track racing in a highly modified Renault
Dauphine.
John
also purchased a Renault Dauphine powered by a 292 cubic inch V8.
It was an unfinished project and after some time John and his mechanic
decided that it was not viable as the basis for a race car mainly due to
the the expense involved and the fact that a suitable gearbox could not
be found, and so the car was scrapped.
The
marriage with Helen was dissolved after only 3 years together.
Moora
Dental Surgery 1971 - 1973
John
took up residence at the new Moora Dental Surgery and had the honour of
being the first resident dentist in the township of Moora. He purchased
a white Lotus Europa but soon tired of it due to its lack of power.
Again John began work on a new project. This was a Renault Floride that
he modified by swapping the 850cc motor for a 1600cc motor and drive-train
from a Renault 16TS. This car performed well and it is still owned by a
farming family in the south west of WA. Not satisfied with
that effort John decided to build a Formual
3 open wheel racing car. He chose a Renault 10 motor and gearbox. The
motor was highly modified by Dave Sullivan in Subiaco. He welded a space
frame chassis from tubular steel and studied race car design before building
the suspension, steering and bodywork. He raced the car at Waneroo race
track at a few meetings without success but he was satisfied that the project
was complete and the car had functioned quite well.
London
Hanwel 1973 -1974
After
arriving in England John purchased an old Renault R8 which he drove from
Edinburgh to London.
In
London, John worked for Dr Eric Sorrel at Hanwel and lived nearby in Ealing.
John
purchased a TVR 3000M sports car from the factory in Blackpool and in his
spare time travelled to different parts of the UK. He then travelled around
Western Europe for several months before shipping himself and the car back
to Perth on the Marconi from the Italian port of Genoa.
Incidentally
he met his second wife Brigitte Bundi (a Swiss national) on board the ship
heading to Fremantle.
North
Perth 1974 - 1976
After
returning to Perth, John leased a dental surgery at 308 Fitzgerald St.
that was formerly owned by Dr Justin McCarthy. During this time John renovated
and started a part time practice at the St Georges Terrace end of London
Court in Perth. John purchased a Lotus Europa that he had owned previously
in Moora. At first he was unaware that it was the same car as he had owned
before because it had been resprayed a yellow colour. He then dismantled
the car and rebuilt it. He swapped the original motor (Renault 16) for
a P76 alloy V8. John designed and built a transaxle using a Ford GT 4 speed
gearbox and a Holden limited slip differential. The machining was carried
out by Kon Melle of KKM tooling when his workshop was still in Morley.
The car had a scintillating performance. John entered the car in
a few drag race meetings at Ravenswood without any notable results but
again was satisfied that he had completed the project and had enjoyed the
experience immensely.
John
remarried during this time to Brigitte Bundi from Switzerland and then
moved to a new home at 276 Drake St in Morley.
Morley
1976 - 1981
Unhappy
with the volume of patients, John closed the North Perth surgery and sold
the London Court practice. He then established a new modern practice in
Progress St. Morley. Soon after his wife gave birth to their first son
Roy. John tried his best but still the work volume was not high enough
to be economical. High rent payments and too many other commitments took
their toll and John closed that practice after a year. Feeling a need for
a change, he opened a steel fabrication business called "Javelin Steel
" in Bayswater where he was kept very busy. He was very happy in this work
where he was able to fully utilise his creative design and practical skills.
Unfortunately with a combination of poor business acumen and some measure
of bad luck, the business had to be closed after 18 months in operation.
His
second son Casey Flynn was born in 1980.
Switzerland
1981 - 1988
With
his wife and two boys John moved to his wife's homeland of Switzerland.
John was able to find work as an assistant dentist with Dr Emile Gruenberg
in Oelikon, a suburb of Zurich. Later John worked for Dr Hirt in Uster
and then eventually worked 5 years for Dr Leviknic in Wald. The long hours,
heavy workload, stress and culture shock led to the early breakdown of
his marriage. During his time in Switzerland John had to learn German.
John purchased a new Renault Alpine V6GT which he drove on many memorable
trips around Europe. John lived in a defacto relationship for 5 years
with Barbara Grossman from Brienz who was an air hostess with Balair.
John
returned home to Perth after 7 years in Switzerland due to his mother's
terminal illness. He decided to stay in Perth and obtained part time work
for a few months. Unfortunately he had to leave the Renault
Alpine in Switzerland because the import duty was prohibitive and being
a left-hand drive, it was not a practical option.
He
obtained a divorce from Brigitte in 1989.
Belmont
Dental Surgery 1989 - 2000
John
purchased the dental practice at 171 Belmont Avenue, Belmont from Dr Tony
Callis. The practice was originally established by Dr Brigitte Mancowicz
who had emigrated from Germany just after World War II.
During
this time John purchased a Porsche 911 but it proved to be too expensive
to run and attracted too many speeding fines. John then bought a 1985 Renault
25 which he found to be ultra reliable, cheap to run and enjoyable to drive.
During this time John married Susanne Abplanalp, the daughter of the Swiss
Consul in Perth. Susanne gave birth to a son Daniel, but the marriage was
short-lived and they were divorced in 1996. John lived at the surgery
for 2 years before buying another house in Rivervale.
John's
inventive mind created the Xerostar Dental Suction System and XeroJet suction
system cleaner which he marketed but with limited success.
(He still uses these products in his present dental practice).
John
spent several years defending himself in the WA Family Court due to unjust
demands for $250,000 unpaid maintenance from the Swiss government. (The
matter was finally resolved in 2004 with a successful appeal).
After
10 years in this practice John felt it was time for a change and he sold
the practice to Dr Ben Campbell.
Full
Time Internet Business 2000 - 2002
John
took what he called a "self funded long Service leave" on AMEX credit.
John
worked for 2 years 7 days a week and up to 18 hours a day on his internet
business.
At
one stage John had created over 30 different web sites. He published a
book about George Harrison
(see
Midi-eBooks.com)
as well as developing 4 different software programs:
"eBook
3D Wizard" - this enables the user to create realistic 3D images of
eBooks, Boxes, DVDs etc.
"Xerotron"
- an idea generator
"eBook
Composer" - converts MS Word documents into multiple HTML pages
ready for an eBook compiler.
"Baby
Name Generator" - an easy way to generate suitable names for babies.
John
lived in a defacto relationship with Lee Huang Yeoh for 10 years (Lee was
from Penang in Malaysia).
Until
recently she owned a successful Chinese restaurant in the Belmont Forum
Shopping centre.
John
also wrote a "musical short story" entitled "The
Xerotron Story" which he published on the Internet.
The
income from this business was not sufficient to pay all the bills so John
decided to go back to dentistry.
Epsom
Dental Care 2003 -
John
rented an empty shop at 5/132 Epsom Ave near Redcliffe and began outfitting
the dental surgery.
The
building work took over 6 months to complete and it was opened for business
in late February 2003.
After
a slow start, the word soon spread that "John Flynn was back" and the appointment
book began to fill.
John
admits he has never been happier in his career and gets a lot of satisfaction
from his work, particularly in cosmetic treatment. Being in a position
to help those in genuine need has also brought him satisfaction.
The
Xerojet cleaning liquid business was taken over by Arron Metcalf in 2004
as John needed to devote more time to his dental practice. John recently
married Pavinee Wonghiran from Thailand.
He
still lives in Rivervale and drives a 2002 Toyota Corolla .. and rides
his bike to work (weather permitting)...
